Description

Our avocado trees grown in Malaga (Spain), today occupy lands where once cereals were grown and later all kinds of vegetables. Possibly the combination of these remains of organic matter from the sowing of various products and the proper use with a variety of traditional, avant-garde cultivation techniques ecological and sustainable have influenced that “The vegetable plot de Pancha “is one of the farms with the highest quality avocado in the area.

OUR AVOCADO CROPS

AvocadoIn the Huerta de Pancha (Málaga) we produce different varieties of Avocados, in this way we can enjoy this exquisite tropical fruit for much of the year. The avocado, despite not being a local variety of the Axarquía, we could say that ours is a native avocado , considering that the dates of production and collection in our town are antagonistic dates with respect to other areas of the world with a tropical climate due to their maturation and collection calendars.

Thanks to our three varieties main , Hass, Fuerte and Lamb Hass we produce avocados for much of the year, without the need to import avocados from other countries with exotic climates . The earliest variety, the Fuerte avocado, with smooth skin with a harvest time from October to December. It is the largest caliber of about 250gr to 380gr approximately (always according to seasons). It is followed by the rough-skinned Hass avocado, possibly the most famous variety. With a harvest time from December to April approximately. Its size is slightly smaller than that of the Fuerte avocado, from about 240g to 300g for the most part. And finally, between May and August we collect the Lamb Hass avocado, very similar in textures and calibers to Hass.

CULTIVATION TECHNIQUES

  • IRRIGATION: In The vegetable plot At Pancha we use localized fertigation systems with humidity detectors, this technique allows the simultaneous application of water and fertilizers and consists mainly of taking advantage of high-frequency irrigation systems to apply the necessary nutrients to the plant, rationalizing the amount of irrigation water that is used.
  • MANUAL PRUNING: We perform the pruning tasks manually, selecting branch by branch. Pruning is essential because it favors the entry of natural light to all the branches of the tree so that the flowers of our avocados set optimally. organic pruning and leaves are left on the ground, thus better maintaining humidity levels, this action again affects the saving water and in the proliferation of microorganisms that help the decomposition of these remains and provide organic matter that avocados use as fertilizer ecological . It is a widely used practice in crops ecological, commonly known as “Mulching” because it also prevents the growth of weeds, not being necessary the use of herbicides in our crops.
  • POLLINATION: As a pollination method we use bees, installing hives controlled by beekeepers in the area in strategic places.

The growing techniques we use and the unique climatic conditions of our vegetable plot They help us when it comes to getting on our way to reduce the use of pesticides to zero, making our crops fall within an agriculture sustainable.

Organic cultivation technique: Mulching

The organic remains of pruning and leaves are left on the ground, thus better maintaining the humidity levels, saving water and favoring the development of microorganisms that help the decomposition of these remains and provide organic matter that avocados use as fertilizer. It is a widely used practice in organic crops known as “Mulching” because it also prevents the growth of weeds, not being necessary to use herbicides in our crops.

It’s a fruit?

Depending on who you ask, you may have one or the other answer. Culturally, some people hold beliefs deeply rooted in their societies. The opinions that affirm that the avocado is a fruit and also those that affirm that on the contrary it is a vegetable are preserved.

At first, the greenish color and the consistency of its pulp are the factors that provoke the existence of thoughts that relate avocados to vegetables.

Likewise, the very high content of fatty acids beneficial to the human body makes one believe that avocado can be a vegetable instead of a vegetable. But the truth is that neither of these two opinions is completely correct.

It’s a fruit, that’s right. The avocado is an exotic fruit that since ancient times has been consumed by our ancestors, and that today does not lose its gastronomic and nutritional validity. The avocado fruit turns out to be one of the easiest to grow and care for.
The avocado tree

What concerns the plants from which the fruits emanate is quite interesting. In the case of the avocado or avocado tree, it is commonly known as avocado tree and whose scientific name is Persea Americana. It is a very easy plant to sow and also to cultivate.

This plant is native to the Mexican nation and contiguous Central American nations. It is an evergreen tree, with shiny and very large leaves with a cluster shape like its flowers. Interestingly, the aguatero is not a self-pollinating tree.

This means that in order for an avocado plant to be productive and bear fruit, it must be planted together with another adjoining avocado plant to pollinate each other. Well-drained soil is required, with a pH close to neutral and fairly light soil.

Likewise, the recommended temperature for the efficient cultivation of avocado plants is between 20 and 23 ° C. It supports very low temperatures but tends to reduce its production during periods of very high temperatures. Of course, it must have a very good source of light.

The care for this plant is not very specific. Irrigation must be regular but without special requirements. Pruning is not required too often, but you must be very aware of parasitic plants and fungi that appear with some frequency. After sowing, in a period of five years the first fruits of the tree are obtained.

How to know if an avocado is ripe?

The best way to determine or recognize when an avocado is ripe is to move it around a bit. If it has its seed loose and you can feel it with the movement, it is a sign that the fruit is ready to be consumed.
